Checking in With Noëmi

Chiara Herold with Noëmi in Hawaii
Exchange Student Noëmi Schönenberger missed a meeting or two, but she had a good if not great excuse - she was in Hawaii!! She visited our 50th State in early March along with many other Exchangers. Noemi said, "We felt like a family after the first few days." The group hiked up Diamond Head, visited Pearl Harbor, and visited the International Marketplace. Noëmi said that the Marketplace was like a rain forest, and there was a fountain in the center. She told us that it rained most of the days she was there, but we did get to see her photo of her "one and only sunset". She did get to go surfing and she took some photos with an underwater camera - we'll get a look at those once they're developed.

Announcements

The Group Study Exchange teams will be arriving soon - one group from France and the other from Turkey - and the District will need assistance with housing and transportation. Please contact President Scott if you can help.

The District Assembly will take place this weekend in Ukiah. The GSE team from France will be honored at a gala on Friday night, and Saturday will be devoted to learning more about the many aspects of the business of Rotary.

We learned that on Saturday, June 9th and Sunday, June 10th, we will be participating in a hands-on project at Orick School. The details will follow, but please save the dates.

Also ... save the dates of June 14th - 17th. That will be the "Heart of Rotary 5130 District Conference". This year, the event will take place in nearby Fortuna. For more information and to register, click here: The Heart of Rotary.

Craft Talking with Garrett Perks

Garrett Perks gave his Craft Talk last Friday. Garrett was born in Southern California, and raised by a single mother, who is a great inspiration to him. When he was born, his mother worked as a medical file clerk, but her drive led her to put herself through law school. She became a partner in her law firm five years ago, and recently became managing partner. When Garrett was about seven, his mother remarried, and two younger brothers followed.

Garrett said that he was a country boy - church on Sundays and a rifle in his hand at other times. He lost one of his eyes at an early age, and the recuperation caused him to miss a couple of years of school. When he returned to the classroom, he found that he was something of an outcast. His anger at his fate led him to quit his church, and his fear that he might lose the sight in his other eye led him to read even more voraciously than he had before.

The family moved, and Garrett was surprised to find that, in his new environs, he was popular. "I had a girlfriend my first week there," he said. He graduated high school in 1999, and took a job at a camp east of Fresno, where he worked for three years.

When he decided to attend college, he came to Humboldt State, fully intending to transfer soon to another school. However, during his sophomore year, Garrett lost the sight in his remaining eye. After operations and medications, he learned that there was a virus attacking his eye that was causing the problem. The problem and its treatment led to Garrett deferring his education for a couple of semesters. When he returned, he decided to stay in Humboldt County.

Garrett said that service is close to his heart. He has helped the homeless and even helped build homes in Honduras some time ago, which led to his first exposure to Rotary.

Orrin Plocher's Recognition Time

The tables were turned on Bob Johnson, who is our usual Recognitionmeister. Orrin grilled him about his recent trip to Ireland. Bob said that the town he visited had a castle and an old bridge. It also had lots of pubs, which inspired President Scott's comment, "Kinda like here?" as he gestured toward the Plaza. The excursion was at heart a business trip - there were about 650 home improvement specialists in the Land of Leprechauns - but they somehow found time to visit the Jameson Distillery and be in Dublin for St. Patrick's Day. The holiday parade there included "marching bands and kinetic sculptures".

Brandi Easter's birthday was Wednesday, March 21st, and she said that she had a celebratory dinner with friends. Brandi also celebrated at her recent "annual gathering of women". We sang "Happy Birthday" to her - both women and men.

The McKinleyville Middle School Woodworking Program

Our featured guest last week was Rand Hall, a teacher at McKinleyville Middle School. With Rand were Jed and Dave Huff. Jed is one of Rand's student's in the Woodworking Program, and Dave assists in the program on a regular basis.

Rand, Jed, and Dave
The woodworking program started in 2009, when the school's administration and faculty recognized the need for elective classes. When Rand was asked what else he could teach (he was already teaching PE), he suggested woodshop class. He got the go-ahead on the Friday before beginning of the Fall Semester. To date, about 390 students have taken the class, in 12-week sessions.

He asked the community for assistance, and former Sunriser Kevin Jenkins of McKinleyville Ace Hardware stepped up and provided enough tools and materials to get things started. Schmidbauer Lumber was another early supporter. Since then, the program has operated on a 100% donation basis - including our own contributions (we have purchased a shop vacuum and bench vises, and we made a contribution to help purchase the shop's dust collection system).

Jed said that he and the other students "have a lot of fun in woodshop". He plans to go into construction as a adult. He brought in and passed around several items that he had crafted in the class.

We Welcome Dean Kruschke!!
Dewey, Dean, and President Scott
Our newest Sunriser is the Branch Manager at Myrtletown Lumber and Supply. Dean Kruschke is the father of two daughters - 11-year old Elizabeth and Samantha, who is 14. Dean enjoys outdoor activities, including swimming, running, mountain biking, hiking, camping, and skiing. We can (and do) thank Dewey Kiefer for serving as Dean's sponsor. Welcome to Arcata Sunrise, Dean!

Announcements
Three members of the Lost Coast Rotaract visited last week to celebrate World Rotaract Week, and to let us know what they have been up to so far this year. Lost Coast is the largest Rotaract Club in District 5130, with 25 members. In addition to being a great help at our 1900's Circus Fundraiser, the group assisted at the Arcata Rotary's Wine Festival earlier this month, they helped collect Toys for Tots, they packed Backpacks for Kids, and they worked on efforts for Crescent City tsunami relief. The Rotaractors also raised $2,600 for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and hosted their annual Halloween Tour of Spooky Old Town Eureka. On April 6th, they will host a Hollywood-themed murder mystery party, "Lights! Camera! MURDER!" at the Sewell Gallery. Tickets for the event are $40. For more information, visit the Lost Coast Rotaract Facebook Page.

Orrin Plocher's Recognitions
Once again, our Recognitionmeister was the renowned Orrin ("O-P") Plocher. The first person to be Plocherized was Dawn Ellsbree. Dawn and her husband Andy recently made a trip to the jungle - in Costa Rica!

Then it was Craig Newman's turn to get O-Plocherated. Craig was being recognized for his birthday, which he had spent at a Spring Fundraiser meeting. We sang to him, of course.

Amy Bohner took the day off for her birthday, at the insistence of her husband Steve. Amy had seen an online video showing someone from Australia celebrating their birthday by giving gifts randomly to people. This inspired Amy to do her own version - she spent about four hours doing "random acts of kindness".

Romi Hitchcock Tinseth shared Good News with us - her daughter Skye has signed up to join the Air Force! And Karen Burgesser's Good News is that her daughter is expecting! Congratulations to both mothers!!

Mindmapping 101 with Barbara Browning
It's always a treat when our Featured Speaker is a Sunriser. Last week, Barbara Browning of OrderWithin talked about a technique for organizing your thoughts called Mindmapping. She told us that the idea was developed in England by Tony Buzan.

Barbara said that the technique allows you to expand on an idea in a way that does not require you to think in linear fashion. Instead, related ideas grow around the central concept, opening like a flower. You begin by writing the initial theme in the center of your medium. (Barbara said that she prefers to use an 11x17 sheet of grid paper in landscape orientation, with colored pens.) From that central idea, you begin drawing lines to related ideas, which in turn can generate their own set of related concepts.Barbara advised us to think in broad categories without filtering what should or should not be included. She said that the mind map can include pictures in addition to words. Once the map is created, it can be translated into a list.

The technique is great for goal setting, project management, even learning a new language. If you have a lot to do and you don't know where to begin, using a mind map can be very helpful.

Barbara said that mindmapping software is available online. Some of the sources she cited were Freemind, Xmind, Mindmeister, and ConceptDraw Mindmap Pro. The first three programs are free or have free versions.

For more tips and for information about Barbara's services, visit the OrderWithin website.

Volume XI, Issue 31: March 10, 2012 - The CIRCUS!!!

- Welcome to the Circus!!! -

The Ringmaster (aka President Scott Heller) and the two Chiefs - Dave Brown and John McFarland - welcomed guests to the 1990's Circus Event, a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise and for the Arcata Volunteer Fire Department. The tenth edition of the event was held on Saturday, March 10th, and it was a resounding success - we appreciate all who volunteered their time and talents.

And of course, our top hats are off to our wonderful guests - many of whom showed up in costume, all with their hearts (and pocketbooks) open.

If you didn't make it, we have a few photos to share with you. You can find even more at the Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise Facebook Page.

A Noëmi Moment
Exchange Student Noëmi Schönenberger said that it had been a busy week - she had traveled to the Bay Area with Lori Breyer and family. They spent time in The City ("I really love San Francisco!"), and also in Pacific Grove. The travelers also visited Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Noëmi will soon be on her way again, this time to Hawaii! The Club wanted to help defray her expenses, so we passed the hat - a shark hat.

Announcements
On Friday, March 16th, our District 5130 will celebrate 25 Years of Women in Rotary. District Governor Maureen Merrill will host a luncheon at the Vintner's Inn in Santa Rosa. For more information, click here.
Ceva with Dan at last year's event

On Wednesday, April 18th, Lacy J. Dalton will headline "The Concert to End Polio Now". The event will take place at the Spreckles Performing Arts Center in Rohnert Park, and all proceeds will benefit Rotary International's Polio Plus program. We are "This Close" to ending polio - enjoy a night of great country music and help bring us even closer! For details, click here.

Rotarian of the Month
Ceva Courtemanche is President Scott's selection for Rotarian of the Month. Ceva took on the Spring Fundraiser's live auction, and this year, she's co-chairing the whole shebang with Dan Johnson! Hats off to a great Sunriser!!

It's Circus Time!!!!
Virtually everything is in place and ready for our Spring Fundraiser, Dan Johnson told us last week. This will be the year that we exceed the $1 million mark for the event. He said that there are only two fundraisers in Humboldt County that gross more than ours, but ours is the only one that utilizes 100% volunteers.

We will be "dark" this Friday, but we will be setting up the venue both Friday and Saturday. There are a number of tasks that still need to be filled for the event itself - we need greeters and raffle ticket sellers, for example. Check the Sign-up Genius site for ways you can help.

Recognitions with Bob Johnson Orrin Plocher?
Bob Johnson relinquished his duties as Recognition Master to an enthusiastic Orrin Plocher last Friday. Orrin started with a two-fer ... he asked Ron Sharp and Barbara Browning to talk about their move to Blue Lake the previous weekend.

Ron said that they had 12 people helping them move, and it all went well. They did experience some thermal discomfort - their new home has no heat. Ron and Barbara made do with space heaters, however, so  the story ended happily.

Last Friday was Bryan Reeser's birthday, but he wasn't certain how it would all play out. "I haven't figured it out yet," he said. It will be a surprise, but it was no surprise that we sang "Happy Birthday" to him.

We had another go at the song when it was revealed that Julie Schaefer's birthday was February 11th. Julie said that she is postponing her party until her daughter can celebrate with her. We didn't wait, though.

Orrin asked for Good News, and someone suggested that Dan Johnson tell us about his recent snowmobiling trip. Dan said that he and his family enjoyed the trip without incident, but there was a guy at the resort who had been riding his snowmobile on a restricted hill who was caught in an avalanche. The machine was totaled, but he survived thanks to a device he had that inflated, creating an air pocket and activating a beacon to signal rescuers.

Bob Moore said that his daughter's basketball team (which includes Dan's daughter) held a party before a recent game. The party was fun for the girls, but a little traumatic for Dan's son (and for Dan, as well). Somehow, Dan's truck struck a tree, deploying its airbags. Oops!

What the best-dressed people plan to wear to the Circus!
