Last week's meeting was led by Past District Governor Terri Clark. Although Terri was never a Sunriser President, she was Club President for the Southwest Eureka Rotary. She frequently attended our meetings - sort of a "Charter Visiting Rotarian".

Terri told us some moving stories about her father, who had passed away earlier in the week. Her dad had a difficult life, losing his own father as a toddler, and with his mother raising her children in the days before public support was an option. Terri advises fathers with daughters not to "break their hearts, even though they will probably break yours".

THE FA REPORT
Fa was not able to attend last Friday's meeting, but her host mother, Romi Hitchcock-Tinseth, provided a brief update. Fa continues to enjoy her complimentary HealthSport membership, as she participates in its Boot Camp program. The downside is that she "hurts in many places". Romi reminded us to keep Fa in mind when we have activities planned. She's a lot of fun, and is interested in learning as much as she can. Please call Romi or Fa to set something up!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Jessica & Barbara swap lives ... sorta
In an unexpected switcheroo, Barbara Browning and Jessica McKnight have swapped roles and years! Jessica is now our President-Elect, and Barbara will follow her into the Club Presidency. That means that Jessica will be attending the upcoming President-Elect Training Seminar (PETS). Acting President (and Past District Governor) Terri Clark noted that her husband Marty Lay is the President-Elect of the Southwest Eureka Rotary Club, so "for the first time, I have a roommate at PETS."

Franco Calleja-Lorenzini, the Rotary Exchange Student from Chile who was injured in a skiing accident, continues his slow but steady recovery. He is still at St. Joseph Hospital, and his parents are pleased. They said that he wouldn't be receiving the high level of treatment back home. Our District will continue its fundraising efforts and support of Franco and his parents.

Terri wanted to do some catching up with some long-time Sunrisers. First up was Jacqueline Debets, who said that currently, most of her life revolves around her 2½ year old son, Luc. She is working to develop an analysis of the local economy, and collaborating with fellow Sunriser Dawn Ellsbree in exploring avenues for economic growth. Jacqueline is also planning a trip to Australia. She will spend about three weeks visiting her sister-in-law, who lives in Queensland.

Terri then spoke with Randy Mendosa, who said that he is kept very busy - by his 8-year old and 10-year old kids at home, and at work by the Arcata City Council. But, "Life is good," he said.

Then Terri gave us her new definition of a best friend. When Terri's father passed away earlier in the week, Terri went to work for a bit, but soon went home. She called Cindy Sutcliffe to talk about it, and Cindy dropped everything to help her friend.

Since school was out for President's Week, Kyle Visser was able to join us. He had two pieces of news for us - his company, Shred-Tec, has acquired a building, and ... his wife Natalie is pregnant! The couple is expecting a boy sometime in June. Congratulations!

SUPERHEROES FUNDRAISER
The Spring Fundraiser is fast approaching, and as of last Friday, we still needed to sell about 12 tables. There was a flurry of sign-up sheets making the rounds, with more to come. Setting up the Community Center will begin at Noon on Friday, March 8th. Last year, the set-up was completed by 5 pm. On Saturday, the focus will be on arranging the items for the Live Auction, the Silent Auction, and the Raffle.

Event Czar Dan Johnson said that the day after our event, the AHS Safe and Sober Committee will hold a Fashion Show Fundraiser that will share our Superheroes theme, and will use most of our decorations and props.

Please contact Janice Newman if you have received any donations of prizes or other items, so she can ensure that those who have helped us receive a thank-you letter. We are also still hoping to identify about six more items for the Live Auction.

RECOGNITIONS
President-Elect Jessica introduced a new Recognitions idea - the Penny Game.  Sunrisers pull a penny from a bag and tell us something about their life, either from the year on the penny or from today. Kathy Fraser pulled a 1977 penny, but decided to tell us about now. After 20 years as a teacher/administrator at Mad River Montessori, and another 15 years as General Manager of North Soles Shoes, Kathy is retiring. Long ago, she and her husband Bill decided that "we weren't going to work a day past 65." Kathy decided not to wait even that long. Bill retired about two years ago, and the couple plans to continue working toward their goal of visiting all of the National Parks in the US. They have also rented a house in Reno, and they plan to live there in the summer to be close to their grandchildren. Kathy said that they will be there on a trial basis, to see how it goes.

2012 was on the penny drawn by Bryan Reeser. He also chose to focus on the present, saying that his kids are keeping him on the go. His son plays basketball and his daughter is a cheerleader. His son also won a spelling bee recently, and his winning word was "discipline". Bryan said that it's the middle of the tax season, which also keeps him busy.

I didn't catch the date of the penny drawn by Julie Schaefer, but she talked about the birth of her daughter, which was very difficult. (She described it as a near-death experience.) But her daughter is now in college, doing great.

Dan Johnson's penny was from 2007, but he talked about life in the present. His older daughter will be graduating from high school soon, and his son is a sophomore, who is "testing every boundary there is". Dan coached his younger daughter's basketball team, which is doing very well.

FOLLOWING FA
Our Exchange Student from Thailand, Fa Sillapajarn, provided an update on her week. She moved in with Romi Hitchcock-Tinseth and family, and is having a good time. She said that she had been having some trouble with her phone, but it is working now.  Fa thanked Sunriser Susan Jansson for a complimentary membership to HealthSport - she said that she has been to "Boot Camp". Fa also went to a birthday party for a fellow exchange student, and they played Pin the Tail on the Donkey and "I eat a lot". And that's why the HealthSport membership comes in handy.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Charter Night Luau is Wednesday, February 27th, at the Arcata Playhouse. Be there to help us celebrate our 21st birthday! (We're finally old enough to drink ... legally!) Don't forget to us the Signup Genius to RSVP online.

Craig Newman provided an update on the condition of injured Rotary Exchange Student Franco Calleja-Lorenzini of Chile. Craig said that Franco is walking and eating on his own, and for now, he is undergoing therapy at St. Joseph Hospital. He can't have visitors yet, but we'll let you know if that changes. Franco's recovery is a slow process, but he continues to make continuous progress.

Our next meeting will be chaired by Past President Terri Clark. Although Terri was never a President of our Club, she did gain some experience as the Prez of the Southwest Eureka Rotary, and maybe a bit more as our District Governor in 2002-2003. Don't miss it!

RINA'S SPECIAL DAYS
January 30th was Rina Brodhag's birthday, but it didn't begin well. She was in Portland, and hubby Steve forgot to wish her a happy birthday in his morning call and her kids didn't call at all. Hrrumph! But all was not lost - her co-workers called her to a meeting midway through the day, and treated her to a cupcake-fest. The following day, she and Steve celebrated their anniversary, sort of. She got home just before midnight, so they got to see one another before the next day began.

SCOTT FINALLY FINISHES
It took weeks for Scott Heller to finish his presentation on his time in Roatan, training to be a divemaster. Unfortunately, we had to cut his talk short last month - we ran out of time. But the last part was soooo good, we had to hear the ending.

As the end of Scott's training approached, he hatched a grand scheme. His son Michael and his girlfriend Robin Meiggs would both be in Honduras for his "graduation". Part of the process involved dedicating a dive area and giving it a new name. Scott told Robin that he had decided to name the site "The Garden of Hedon", in honor of his firm, Hedon Investments, and he asked her to dive with him there for the dedication ceremony. She agreed, but the weather was determined to spoil the event. Undaunted, Scott tried one last time. He, Robin, Michael, and Bebe Bryans dove to the site, with "Scuba Suz" shooting video. You can see what occurred at the dive site (real name: "Robin's Nest") by clicking anywhere in this sentence.

RECOGNITIONS WITH LORI
Lori Breyer served up the Recognitions last Friday, focusing on Sunrisers in the News and Valentines Day

If you watched the video from the link above, you know that Robin Meiggs is now engaged to Scott Heller. What you would not have learned from that video is that Robin was also elected to serve on the NCAA Division II Women's Rowing Committee. This group determines the national rankings of rowing teams each month, and it is responsible for assigning the seeds in the national championships. Congratulations, Robin!

Angelo Baciagaluppi's kids Emma and Diego were in the news - at least they were on Facebook. The youngsters were dressed to the nines to serve as flower girl and ring bearer for a friend's wedding. Angelo said, "They love the chance to get dressed up." Angelo said that on Valentines Day, he had to wait a while for Michelle to get home - it's tax season, and she works for Jackson & Eklund. But they did plan a nice Saturday dinner at Moonstone, while the in-laws cared for the kids.

Valentines Day arrived early for Jeff Munther - he and his wife Courtney are expecting another boy in July. They did attend a fundraiser for the Special Olympics at the Ingomar Club recently, but their Valentines Day celebration was a nice dinner with the family.

Rina and Steve Brodhag were seen recently at the Southwest Eureka Rotary's Vampire's Ball fundraiser. Both were in costume - Rina as a vamp and Steve as an Archbishop. Steve was out of town on Valentines Day, so Rina went to the HSU basketball game.

Reflections on Peace Through Service
Sunriser Maggie Kraft has been a social worker since 1988. During those 25 years, she has given quite a bit of thought about service and about peace. Given that "Peace Through Service" is Rotary President Sajuki Tanaka's theme for the current Rotary year, Maggie's reflections on the topic were a natural topic for a presentation.

Maggie recently returned from an assignment with the Peace Corps, and she said that she realized that "the mission or desire of the Peace Corps is very similar to the desire of Rotary thoughout the world." She said that our actions as Rotarians promote peace. "It's the things we do every single day."

Maggie Kraft - "Peace Through Service"
Maggie has given much thought to the meaning of peace, beginning with, then going beyond the dictionary definitions. She has come to believe that one of the great enemies of peace is poverty. She said that "Poverty doesn't cause war, it makes war a reasonable option."

Rotary promotes peace by addressing poverty. In fighting polio and addressing education and literacy issues, we also promote peace.

There are other things that interfere with our practice of peace. Maggie listed ego and fear as two. We can give in to feelings of anger or frustration with other drivers on the road, or our co-workers who do things that irritate us.

Maggie also looked up the definition of service and found herself drawn to the version that means to be "of use". But who decides whether we are of service? The recipient determines that. To truly be of service means that there are no strings attached. "Those who are served," Maggie noted, "do not owe us anything."

But we owe ourselves something - we should be servants but not slaves. If we begin to feel that way, "maybe we should step back and say, 'Wait a second ... am I doing this out of true service, or am I doing it out of a feeling of obligation?'" When we offer our service freely, we can provide true "service with a smile".

CATCHING UP WITH FA
At our last meeting, Exchange Student  Fa Sillapajarn reported on another up and down week. She told us that the previous Friday was a sad day, as she learned that her grandmother had passed away.

The highlight of her week was a birthday party for her fellow Exchanger Manon Wazowski, which was attended by many other local Exchange Students. But Fa was also excited later that day, she was planning to move in with her latest host family - Romi Hitchcock-Tinseth et. al.! And ... she was preparing to attend the Junior Prom the next day. I'm sure we'll hear about that at our next meeting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
After many "Power Meetings" among our Club's high muck-a-mucks, a theme has emerged for our upcoming Charter Night - it's gonna be a LUAU!! So on Wednesday, February 27th, put on your Hawaiian shirt or muumuu and be ready to celebrate with Kahuna Kavinta!!! There will be pupu platters and foo-foo drinks complete with umbrellas available. Don't miss it!

Craig Newman reported that Exchange Student Colin Swenson will be taking temporary leave from his posting in Italy to travel to Israel. In mid-March, Colin will take part in the first International Rotary Youth and Young Adults Peace Conference. Craig also said that Colin and his initial host family recently visited Croatia, which is very close to his host city of Trieste.

Howard Stauffer announced that our Club has submitted the paperwork requesting a Rotary Matching Grant to fund the expansion of the Cambodia Academy at Mongkol Borei. If the funds are approved, the amount raised for the project will total $75,000.

From our weekly Superheroes Fundraiser update, we learned that we have sold about 28 tables; just over halfway to the goal of 50. The Live Auction is going well, with only about five more items needed. Keep selling and working to get your prizes for the Silent Auction and the Raffle.

If you know Sunriser Amy Bohner, you know that she is wonderful. But did you know that she is a stellar fundraiser and a Big Sister (with Big Brothers/Big Sisters)? She was last seen selling cupcakes for the HROP Culinary Arts program. But if you CLICK HERE, you'll see Amy with her "Li'l Sis", having all kinds of fun with snow, cakes, and quilts. Don't miss it.

President George and the Club were treated to not just one, but two Valentunes last week. Each year, members of the ArMack Orchestra and the Arcata High School Madrigal Choir form roving troupes to serenade (usually) unsuspecting individuals with love songs. The funds raised help support the travel plans of the two groups. The students who visited last week performed two songs - "1-2-3-4" and "All My Loving".

Cam Appleton updated us on the condition of Franco Calleja-Lorenzini, the Exchange Student from Chile who was seriously injured during the recent Youth Exchange ski trip. Franco is walking, and doing better. He is getting ready to go to a rehab facility in Santa Clara for more therapy. If you are a Facebook member, you can monitor his progress on the "Franco Updates" page.

MAGGIE"S BIG DAY
We celebrated only one Special Day last Friday, and that was Maggie Kraft's birthday. She said that she had a great time, and it somehow involved Bob and Susan Johnson and the Logger Bar ... Hmm ... She also said that she attended a show at Humboldt State and had dinner with a friend. Either Maggie has embraced our Club's "Birthday Month" tradition, or it was a very busy Tuesday!

VISITING WITH THE SBMS INTERACT CLUB
Every year, members of the Sunny Brae Middle School Interact Club visit our Club to sell handmade Valentine's Day cards to support their projects. This year, as usual, we took the opportunity to ask about their activities.

SBMS Principal Linda Yeoman started by telling us that the Interact Club has expanded. It has merged with a student leadership group known as the "Spirit Roadrunner Club". Several of the Interactors listed some of the projects the organization is involved in:
  • Raising funds for St. Jude's Children's Hospital
  • Filling and distributing Christmas stockings to underprivileged children
  • Holding a canned food drive to help needy families
  • Raising money to help the homeless
  • Collecting "Coats for the Cold"
Craig, Linda, and the Interactors
Linda said that helping out with our Taste of the Holidays fundraiser is a very popular assignment with the Interactors. She told us that in the days before the event, students were coming into her office, hoping to be the first ones to sign up.

Sunriser Craig Newman, who has chaired our Interact Committee for many years, presented the Interactors with a check from our Club for $250 to help them continue their good work.
