Last week, we had a visit from Mike Crumbo, a Rotarian from Indiana. He said that the Greenwood/White River Rotary Club has 24 members, and meets Wednesdays at 6:30 am. Mike was in town to visit his daughter and her family, including Mike's new grandson.

Fa Sillapajarn, our Rotary Exchange Student from Thailand, said that she was all ready for her impending "Bluesbuster" trip to San Francisco. Each year, our District's Exchange Students head for the Bay Area for the weekend, and our Exchangers invariably cite it as a highlight of their years. I'm sure that Fa will weigh in at our next meeting.
Carol Jacobsen of the ARMACK Orchestra visited last week, along with two of her students (including Kahuna Junior, aka Georgie Cavinta). The trio was promoting their fundraiser, "The Black Pirate". This is a silent movie starring the swashbuckling Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., with music and sound effects provided by the swashbuckling Orchestra. The movie was screened last week at McKinleyville High School, and it will continue this week at Arcata High. Your next chance to enjoy this multi-dimensional event will come Thursday at 7 pm. It will be repeated Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 2 pm and 7 pm. The event will help support the Orchestra's travel to New York to participate in a music festival and perform at Carnegie Hall next April.
Another ARMACK musical contingent will be performing Friday at the Veteran's Memorial Hall. The "Howlin' Moon Blues Review" will feature the ARMACK Jazz Band, along with performances by musicians from the Arcata Arts Institute. (Rotary "Kid" Brody Johnson is part of both groups.) The event will begin at 8 pm, and tickets are $10 per person, which will provide finding for the Jazz Band's trip to the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival.

- November 15: A Taste of the Holidays - it's our Club's Fall Fundraiser, and your help is needed!
- November 24: Fifth Friday Fellowship Event - Tailgate party at the HSU Jacks Basketball Game.
- December 6: Foster Youth Holiday Dinner - Prep or serve, it's a great way to help our local foster youth.
- December 6-8: The Jerry Paul Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament - The first night coincides with the Foster Youth Dinner, so we could use help then, but don't rule out a Saturday shift!
SPECIAL DAYS AND RECOGNITIONS
We mentioned Karen Burgesser's birthday in the last Sunrise Spirit, however, since it was taking place as the October 12th meeting was in progress, we were not able to get a full report. However, at last Friday's meeting Karen told us the whole story - later in the day she took herself out to lunch. Karen had more to say about her recent anniversary - she and her husband Steve enjoyed a great dinner at Cher-Ae Heights, with a "beautiful ocean view, with no fog". Congratulations to Karen and Steve on their 40th anniversary!
Brother Bob Johnson returned to the podium as Recognitionmeister Deluxe. He noted that many Sunrisers have a lot on our plates -we work our regular jobs and serve as Rotarians, of course, but a lot of us volunteer for other organizations as well. He asked Your Editor what other projects I am involved in. Sadly, the only outside project I'm currently involved in is the "nonprofit venture" known as Two-Car Garage. By day, however, I do work for the Institute for Wildlife Studies, which is a nonprofit on purpose.
Here are some Sunriser volunteers you'll be more impressed with:
- For over 20 years, Brandi Easter volunteered for KEET-TV, in several capacities.
- Garrett Perks was just elected as a board member for the California Baptist Foundation.
- Amy Bohner has been a volunteer for Planned Parenthood for about five years. (Amy volunteers from 4 pm to 7 pm. She is not sure whether that detail is important, but since very few details make it into the Sunrise Spirit, I decided to include it.)
- Maggie Kraft was a Peace Corps Volunteer who is now heading up the Area 1 Agency on Aging, but she is shopping for the right volunteer niche.
- Laura Montagna's volunteer resume runneth over. Among other projects, she is working with the Arcata Playhouse on its "Women of the Pacific Northwest" project. She also volunteers for KEET-TV and is on the Board of Directors for Redwood Curtain Theatre.
- Barbara Browning has embarked on a project to help the Boys and Girls Club with organization.
- Visiting Rotarian Alister Shirazi (the iPhone Surgeon) serves in the National Guard, and he is part of the group's leadership program.
- Cam Appleton has a long history of working with the all-volunteer Fieldbrook Fire Department.
Lori Breyer announced that Orick School will hold an Open House on Thursday, November 1st at 4:00 pm. This may appeal to those who helped out with the classroom move and clean-up in June.
Rebecca Crow gave a quick report on the activities of the Community Service Committee. The group's projects include:
- Pastels on the Plaza (completed)
- Backpacks for Kids (ongoing)
- Cross-Country Championships - this is our 3rd year, and the program involves kids from Orick to Redway. It will be held Friday, October 26th.
- Adopt-a-Highway (ongoing)
Cam Appleton told us that we are still looking for a third host family for our 2013-2014 Exchange Student. Remember, it doesn't have to be a Rotarian.
Randy Mendosa announced that our Financial Assistance Committee has agreed to support the students of Orick School by helping fund their coming trip to Washington, D.C.
